Windmill: Photo, poem

"I stand here in my place,
With my foot on the rock below,
And whichever way it may blow,
I meet it face to face,
As a brave man meets his foe. "

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807 – 1882)

H W Longfellow had a sustained interest about Holland having travelled in that beautiful country of windmills and tulips. When I cross Westminster Abbey during my weekly walks, I am always reminded about the great literary figures who are either buried there or were honoured. Longfellow it was said was the first American man of letters honoured in this hallowed church where Charles Dickens and Samuel Johnson lay buried.

We had a good break in a village near Hague last year, and this village has two beautiful windmills. No wonder the great Longfellow was swayed by their beauty as they are usually perched near a stream. No wonder this beautiful country produced such great impressionist painters as Van Gogh and Vermeer.
