It was fantastic reading, your article ...Dear Sir,

It was fantastic reading, your article on WW2, Life in the 40's, Ernakulam. Et cetera. A lot of waht you say connects with what my grand father used to tell me when I was a child.

We are settled in Fort Cochin. My grandfather got transferred to Fort Cochin from the port city of Alleppey in 1956 and retired 3 years later settling in Fort Cochin. He died in 1983. He was born in 1899.

An intresting thing he said I recollect, he came and lived in Vallarpadam for a brieh period of 3 years in in 1921 because a new big port bigger than Alleppey was going to be built there. But the original plan changed and he went back to Alleppey and the port was being built on Wellingdon Island later!!! They could not afford to come and live in Fort Cochin those days it seems. It was purely for the British and Portugese descendants. My grand father remembers seeing the Ford Motor Company's car showroom in Kunnumpuram and the Standatd & Chartered bank's branch in Kalvetty, Fort Cochin in the 1931. There was also a theatre by the name of 'Select' on Kunnumpuram road which was actually demolished and the wood from it was used to build a house of his friend 1n 1931. Another one was 'Majestic' on the site of which 'Zaina' was built which later turned into 'Kokkers''. But the oldest surviving he remembers as the 'Star' theatre in Mattacncherry. I am telling you this because it has been errenously reported (not in your bolgs) that theatres in Ernakulam was the firts one to be built in Kerala.

A particular thing for which I want corroboration from you, if you know about it, is a piece of Cochin's history. My uncle was friendly with K.J. Berly brother of Ex. MLA K.J. Herschel. It is attributed to him that their family, Kurisinkal, had trade with Europe and had several sailing ships in the 1400's. Hailing from Gothuruth island, they were also close to the Chendamangalam Paliam. It seems at the Paliath Achan's behest it was they who were intrumental in originally inviting (secretly) the Portugese to fight for Cochin against Calicut. And later when the Portugese turned out to be bad for everyone , it was them again, who invited the Dutch to fight against the Portugese.

I have not heard of this peice of history anywhere else. I would be grateful to know if you have heard this anywhere. That is real greatness as it shows your passion for what you do...

I request you not to publish the following part as it is personal in nature:

I mentioned about your article to my father. He told me that though he doesn't know you personally, he knows some of your relatives. To make it easier for me to understand, he mentioned some matrimonial relationships that your family has with his friends from families in Kanjirapally (my home town). Frankly the only person among them who knows me ever since I was a little child is Pottamkulam Vakkachayan (Shri. George Varghese) :-) I am Binoj K Ravi (binojkr@yahoo.com) and is known to him as Biju. 'somettan' is a blog name I opted for, when I thought of starting a blog - 2nd floor, Keralam.
